Vouwbeen
It has been a rough couple of days. My jet lag has been especially bad making it very difficult to sleep. The hot water tank blew out after the mega storm on Tuesday. Let me tell you when it storms in Arnhem, it storms like nobody’s business (all day, non-stop, thunder and lightning). This residency is also very different from my previous ones in such that there are no other artists but me, so it gets terribly lonely. To top it off, I remembered that I forgot my bone folder (again). Grrr.
Luckily, the master printer that I am working with, Mars Wellink, saved the day. He showed me how to reset the hot water tank, brought me the art supplies store, Peter van Ginkel, located around the corner from my apartment, and toured me around Arnhem centrum which is very quaint and lively. Also if you ever needed to express the word bone folder in Dutch, it is vouwbeen. Mars also showed me how to make a montage for my screen project; it’s more methodic and complex than I expected. Thanks, Mars!
I am loving all the bike culture in the Netherlands. Everyone rides bicycles including babies, men in suits and senior citizens. I also noticed that a lot of Dutch folks decorate their bikes with plastic flowers, stuffed animals and blasts of spray paint. I broke down today and made my first purchase: a pannier that looks like a purse!
